Past Splendor with Majestic Views
Auerbach Castle is situated above Bensheim-Auerbach on one of the westernmost foothills of the Odenwald. It was built in the 13th century and extensively renovated in the 14th century. Since its destruction in 1674, the impressive ruin has offered a wide panoramic view.
A popular photo spot, the castle lies along an old trade route — today known as the Bergstraße — which was already used by the Romans. In the 13th century, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen controlled the route. Revenue from tolls on the Middle Rhine had made them wealthy and powerful, and they secured their rule with numerous castles between the Taunus and the Odenwald. Auerbach Castle was one of them. The main fortress is arranged around a triangular courtyard, which is typical of Katzenelnbogen architecture. It contains a well that is still preserved today, reaching a depth of 62 meters.
