One of the first mock castle ruins following a Medieval model
Clearly visible from Wilhelmshöhe Palace, the ‘medieval’ Löwenberg Castle has been standing for nearly 200 years. And now, following many years of repair, the castle - another attraction at the UNESCO World Heritage Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe - opens its doors, behind which the original interior decoration is on view.
Created by Landgrave Wilhelm IX (1743 - 1821), Löwenburg was one of the first castles built in the romantiv-era, based on a medieval model, including its armoury, two drawbridges and keep. While its exterior is seemingly influenced by the Middle Ages, the interior, now a museum that’s open to the public, surprises with some remarkable historical details. Rare precious objects such as a wall hanging made of thousands of little glass beads, testify to the Hessian Landgraves’ refined passion for collecting.
